Firstly, allow me to introduce myself. I am a qualified school music teacher with an interest in child development
and self-expression. Musical Playtime, my other franchise, developed from a need to carry on
working when my eldest children were at school and I had another baby.
Seventeen years on these classes are still very successful. During Musical
Playtime sessions I notice the smiles on peoples faces when they join in a
barn dance or gallop around the hall together. Recently I have become aware of
the press coverage about obesity and how inactive our children are nowadays.
This gave me the idea for an exercise class which includes movements from
various disciplines; yoga, quigong, fitness and dance. If adults join in and
have fun with the children then they get fitter too.

Jigalong consists of a manual of how to run
the classes plus detailed lesson
plans for a year - 36 weeks divided into 3 school terms. Included is an
Overview for each term which includes learning objectives against Key Stage 1
of the school curriculum. The music for the sessions is in running order on
18 compilation CDs (2 sessions per CD) making it
easy to run the classes. Some original CDs are also included in the package.
|

Jigalong may be run on a license arrangement
within a school. In this case the Head Teacher would purchase the package on
behalf of the school. The class could be taken by
teachers, teaching assistants or others qualified to work with children
and is structured so that for each lesson there is an assessment of the children's
progress against key stage 1 objectives in the school curriculum. This
includes Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) learning outcomes, specific learning objectives, key skills, assessment
opportunities and questions for self-assessment; there is a separate overview
for each school term.
The initial cost of Jigalong is £400. The initial outlay includes the
Jigalong package and training if required. There is also a monthly license fee of £25 for unlimited
use within one school. Ongoing help and support via email, phone and
website is included. Some equipment used in the sessions may already be available within the school.

“A franchise is the granting of a license by one person (the franchisor) to another (the
franchisee), which entitles the franchisee to trade under the trade mark/trade
name of the franchisor and to make use of an entire package, comprising all
the elements necessary to establish a previously untrained person in the
business and to run it with continued assistance on a predetermined basis” (British Franchise Association).

As an alternative to running Jigalong on a license
arrangement within a school the classes may also be run by an individual as
a franchise. A franchisee would run Jigalong
classes within an agreed area (your Territory) at times and places of your
choosing. This may be within school time (e.g. Planning, Preparation
& Assessment time) or in a hall you have
hired for the purpose. In this latter case adults could stay and join in
activities with the children if they wanted to. Running these classes is a rewarding part-time
job, it can be fitted around a family, you can work the hours you choose and
you are in control of your own business.
|

Yes, training is included although you will be expected to pay for accommodation
if you stay overnight.
|

You will be expected to purchase your own equipment to run the classes. Advertising will also be up to you although a template to help you will be
included in the franchise package.
|

You need to be fit in order to
demonstrate some of the movements, have a bubbly personality, good
communication skills and a love of children.
|

You can if you are holding classes in a
hired hall and as an after school club (with school's approval) but not if the
classes are in school time.
|

The initial cost of the franchise is £400. The initial outlay includes the franchise
package and training. There is also a monthly license fee of £25 for unlimited
use within your specified territory. For this you will be entitled to
ongoing help and support
via email, phone and website.
Depending on how much equipment you already have equipment costs
should be less than £200 for a class of 15 children. If you are taking the
classes in school time the school will probably have some of the equipment
which you can use. As you are self-employed you can claim tax relief for capital
expenses which includes the cost of equipment.
You must take out a personal
liability insurance policy (~£110) per annum and the hire of halls will cost
approximately £10-£20 depending on where you live. You will need a
CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) check and would be expected to arrange this
yourself.
|

A class in school time will be paid at the going rate (e.g.
£20 per hour). If you take your own classes in a hired hall then you can earn
£45 for a class of 15 children (plus adults if you can get them to join in!)
for a charge of £3 each. You would have to deduct from this the cost of
hiring the hall. The intention is that Jigalong classes are affordable to all and
the amount charged will vary depending on the area where you live.

Approach your local schools to see if they would be
interested in having a Jigalong class.
